Robathy - What do computer user say?

WHAT DO COMPUTER USERS SAY ?

During the project Forgiveness, Empathy, Emotion we have worked with the history and principles of humane and empathic interfaces, talked about forgiveness in UI and UX and other paradigms in modern experience design industry. Computer users expect digital products to understand them and to forgive their mistakes. Designers look for ways to make their interfaces not only friendly but lovable.

While we were busy with all that, another task was to listen to oneself and write down what WE as users like, hate, miss, ... We've made a collection of statements that concern each of us and I made it into a website which follows the empathic design principal: it mirrows emotions and expressions. Robathy will guide you through my website and expresses his emotions, just like we would.

AS A COMPUTER USER I LOVE...

I love that I can STILL use Twitter inside the browser without the must to download a twitter app and that i can go from user to user by typing the profile name in location bar, the same with the Instagram. And among NEW developments. Took me some time to think about it: I like that on android/chrome when i tip on URL it gives to me three options: share/copy/type See example. It is already a year or two old, and i remember hating it when it was implemented, so the new here is my acceptance of it.
- olia24

I like airdrop function. with airdrop you can easily share data with other devices and other people's devices. that makes a lot of things easier when transferring data. (One thing I find critically is that it only works with apple devices.)
- xx_pummelfee03

I like automatically saving of pictures or media in the phone gallery from whatsapp. I like the update where you can make call from your lap top, not only from mobile phone app. And i like that you can use whatsapp on two devices on the same time. Also i like the newest google 3D feature, the AR Option and also the new Apple feature on mail, where you can send bigger files without using wetransfer or other online mail programms, now its embeded directly on Mac computer (probably works only on Big Sur update).
- Seki94

I love the keychain system by Apple, otherwise I'd forget all of my passwords.
- xXAlashkyXx

I love when settings in apps are logically structured so that I don't have to spend hours looking for them. (for example they haven´t a thousand subfolders)
- jana_k99

I love that browsers let us install extensions (or even create our own ones) that fix many of the problems mentioned on this page (Ad-Block, Automatic Darkmode, Imagus for easier Image preview) A recent discovery I have made, is that (at least in Firefox) you can right click anywhere in a window and at the top of the context window that pops up, there are buttons to go a page back, just like the one at the top left corner of the screen. I have been using this instead ever since, because it's so much quicker and more convenient than always moving the cursor up there: See example
- marius

I love the function of being able to copy something from my iPhone and paste it on my MacBook. This makes the linkage between Apple devices more seamless. Like keychains and airdrops mentioned by other friends, I think interlocking between different electronic devices is very important. This makes our lives and devices closer together.
- seoyoung

There is one little thing that makes me always happy. It's that moment after you logged in with your mobile phone and the program wants a verification code, and the only thing you have to do is to klick on the six or eight numbers above your keyboard, which are automatically filtered out of your text messages, and it's done.
- vincent.dm_m3

I love when there is an actual human to answer your questions instead of an automated (and frankly stupid) Chatbot (I don't mind Chatbots, that are not pretending to be anything else).
- unicorn_princess1

I LOVE these QR codes when they are used in electronic payment system.
- yue

I love the gesture control from the newish iPhones, because for me this makes a much more fluent user experience and I think it also just looks nicer that the front of the phone is mostly screen now.
- c4r4m3lt1gg3r

I love the connection between phone, TV and Google Home. Smart home commands for an easy life.
- isa_belx1

I just love the allgorithom from spotify/youtube so that can find new songs and videos who are so acurate to my actual taste.
- the_only_jo

I love when youtube makes a random playlist out of songs that i like and might like, i can just turn it on and discover new songs but also enjoy. Or if my phone makes random videos out of photos and videos made in one day or month, you don't have to deal with video softwares, and they are mostly very funny.
- maria

I do love “UNDO” function, sometimes I wanna undo something I ruined in reality as virtual place like Internet. Moreover I love Connection among “Apple” applications like AirDrop and so on.
- jinnie

I HATE...

I HATE that when in gallery mode in the browser I can't use back button to exit it. Also I hate when words are underlined on a web page, but they are not links. I hate that browsers have so thin borders now because it is pain to resize windows.
- olia24

I don't like that whereby has no background blur function. Everyone should be free to decide how they want to organize their privacy. Many do not have a workplace at home, so private spaces become workplaces.
- xx_pummelfee03

I dont like the new feature in outlook, where you have two types of mails (relevant/sonstige) and I also don't like the unmanageable color of the mails, Initals ar quite enough.
- Seki94

I hate that Instagram put a shopping option where before the notifications were so I often click on the shop instead of checking my notifications...
- xXAlashkyXx

I hate it when there is only the desktop website version while i´m using the internet on my phone.
- jana_k99

I hate it when news websites require you to sign in or pay after reading the first paragraph of an article and they also bombard you with newsletters and other pop-ups.
- marius

I hate that I can't clearly see my bookmarks folder on Chrome. I used to bookmark web browsers and categorize them according to topic. But in Chrome, bookmarks are not in the sidebar like in Safari, and pop-up windows appears repeatedly until I get to the bookmarks folder. This makes it difficult to see the classified appearance at a glance and covers the entire window, so the screen looks messy.
- seoyoung

I hate it when the cookie-options on an website switch sites and color.
- vincent.dm_m3

I'm not a fan of navigating a million sub-menus to find what I'm looking for (Schufa Auskunft, I'm looking at you...)
- unicorn_princess1

I hate...that nowadays you have to scan to login by many websites.
- yue

I hate it, when a pop-up is blocking the whole website. Or when there is a (cookie) banner that blocks more than 2/3 of the screen of the mobile website and you can't view the content properly.
- c4r4m3lt1gg3r

I hate it when websites are not responsive, beause you have to zoom in on anything.
- isa_belx1

I hate when Apps and whebsites dont have a darkmode.
- the_only_jo

I hate it when i can't minimise the window of youtube on my phone to listen to music and to chat at the same time.
- maria

I hate the “Auto-fill” or “Auto-Login” function because it makes me feel that Internet knows everything about me, even my private secrets. So I try not to use this function…! And I don’t like Outlook’s Online & Offline function, because sometimes I cannot get the important mails for few days and find them later…
- jinnie

I'M PROUD...

I AM PROUD that I keep my QR codes as screenshots, so I don't need to install an app of this or that service to retrieve them. I AM PROUD "I have two Twitter accounts and log in to one in Firefox, and the other in Chrome. This is how I do it and it doesn’t matter why I prefer to manage it this way. Maybe I don’t know that an app for managing multiple accounts exists, maybe I knew but didn’t like it, or maybe I’m too lazy to install it. Whatever, I found a way. And you will do as well.(2011)
- olia24

I'm proud that I can trick air drop and use outlook, discord etc. for fast data transfer from different devices, because airdrop is only possible with apple devices.
- xx_pummelfee03

(I'm proud ) of using Youtube Vanced App that allows all videos on the platform to be played with the display switched off. The Vanced blockes all advertisements, so there are no interruption while hearing the music. (I'm also proud) of downloading the youtube music into mp3 file when i don't have internet outside, so i always have my music with me, even offline (and for free).
- Seki94

I'm proud that I'm taking screenshots of pictures for example on Reddit or Twitter instead of downloading them because it's faster. Obviously the quality isn't that good but honestly... I don't care!:D.
- xXAlashkyXx

I´m proud that I delete the watermark of pictures I usually should pay for with photoshop so I can use them for my private stuff without paying.
- jana_k99

I am proud of using the night mode (like Night Shift on mac) on my smartphone constantly to remove the blue tint of the screen, which can't be adjusted in the phone itself.
- marius

I am proud of my planner customized in Google Sheets. There are two types of sheets in this planner. The first one is monthly, and the second is a daily planner for 7 days. Many of my leisure activities take place online, such as writing a journal, listening to music, and watching movies. Therefore, I thought that making planners online would be more accessible. Also, I posted a planner link on the main profile of my private twitter account. The account was created to interact with my close friends. I made my friends watch my planner so that I try to keep the plan.
- seoyoung

I'm proud that I still don't use streaming services for music. Instead, I borrow music from library or buy it.
- vincent.dm_m3

I am proud, that I used my old Samsung Galaxy S5 for 5 years (because it was good enough and didn't break), until my Dad gave me his new Samsung Galaxy S20 because it didn't have a headphone jack anymore... (he kept his old S9)
- unicorn_princess1

I AM PROUD to use watermarks of all my works on social media.
- yue

I'm proud, that I have my own WhatsApp-Group, where I send myself reminders, to-do's and locations that I want to remember.
- c4r4m3lt1gg3r

I am proud that I still use my Iphone7, which is nearly 6 years old, even though the screen is already flickering and its close to dying because I am to stingy to buy a new phone.
- isa_belx1

I am Proud that I try to spread some Good Vibes under Conntroversial topics to work agains the hate in the Coments.
- the_only_jo

I am proud that I found a way to block advertisements while listening to music, I just switch to the airplane mode and enjoy the music without interruptions. (sometimes it doesn't work but anyways)
- maria

I’m proud of the place of Menu bar, people usually use it placing at the bottom of window as default, but I changed it to the left-side because whenever I work with programs or do googling, I click another program by mistake, and this is annoying that it takes some time to close it. Plus, I am proud of using Mac’s Schedule application well with detailed schedule and memo for classes. Moreover, I try to delete my Histories of Internet every it comes into mind, not to fall into “Filter Bubble”, which can show biased topics or news.
- jinnie

I REGRET...

I REGRET I still have't learn how to sort my email properly. I mean i have an inbox and that's all.
- olia24

I regret that I order a lot more stuff on the internet through personalized advertising.
- xx_pummelfee03

I'm little bit embarrased that i didn't know how how to search GIFS on Whatsapp that i wanted, till one friend showed me (i never noticed the search icon on the bottom left). Also i wished to know how to use my mobile phone (huawei p20 Lite) better and quicker with the gesture and touch control option in settings. I also didn't know how quick the decoding of phone with a fingerprint ID can be, so i always gave the number code, which lasts longer. I didn't know what the circle on the back of the phone was for, till one friend(the other one) showed me.
- Seki94

I regret signing up to facebook (when I was 11 years old.. :D).
- xXAlashkyXx

I regret that I use only safari, although I know other browser are better but I´m too lazy. The only reason why I use Google Chrome is this course.
- jana_k99

I regret not learning keyboard shortcuts for different programs earlier and instead using only buttons on the screen, because I was too lazy. Same thing with my mouse, which has four customizable extra buttons which I didn't use for years until I realized how much they speed up my workflow.
- marius

I regret I didn't turn off the autofill function yet since I had bought my phone two years ago. It is such a hassle to figure out how to do it.
- seoyoung

I regret, that I never started to delete my screenshots immediately. Now there are to much and I'm to lazy to clear my galerie.
- vincent.dm_m3

I regret (and am ashamed), that I still haven't learned how to use Excel properly... (I put the Numbers in by hand after I calculate them with my calculator... yeah, I'm that bad)
- unicorn_princess1

I REGRET I didn't leave a phone number and bank card active at home, which causes a looooooot of problem by using many apps.
- yue

I regret that I often just click "accept all" when asked about cookies, because I just find these banners so annoying and it's just quicker that way.
- c4r4m3lt1gg3r

I regret that I dont know how to google properly, it has to be learned too.
- isa_belx1

I regret that I dont often use short cuts but i konw them. xD
- the_only_jo

I regret that I am not doing any updates because every time I go on my notebook I know what I want to do and this update suggestions are distracting me. So i am ignoring it until my notebook (the same with my prone) can not download some programmes. (But then I have no space on my phone for an update)
- maria

I regret that I haven’t download the Chrome application on my Phone yet which can support Language Translation function, so that I always have to use laptop if I want to check the contents written by German or others.
- jinnie

I MISS...

I'm a computer user since 27 years, things came and went, but if to name ONE I REALLY MISS it is del.icio.us, social bookmarking service (2003-2017), unique place to keep, organize and share bookmarks.
- olia24

I'm a computer user about 17 years and I really miss Adobe Flashplayer and so flash games too. I think it was an important cultural thing.
- xx_pummelfee03

As a user for, let's say for 20 years, i miss several things. Before starting my graphic design college I was Microsoft user and i miss WINDOWS 7 OPERATING SYSTEM, which was the best operating system before Windows 10 arrived. What else am I missing are the old flip mobile phones (examples sony ericsson and nokia) because there were really cool (and usefull, they could fit everywhere and were not so easy to damage). Not long time ago, i had Nokia N95 mini and i still miss that phone! There are some recently hardware device changes that i will miss in the future, for example the Shrinking of Mac book laptops, where you dont have usb connection directly on your lap top. I will miss that feature when i will have to buy new laptop.
- Seki94

I'm a computer user for about 16 years and I really miss USB ports on my Macbook. I also miss "physical Software" by that I mean for example having a program like Photoshop not just downloaded from a cloud, but available as a CD. I kind of have the feeling that there is nearly any software that's still available in a physical form, such as CDs.
- xXAlashkyXx

I´m a computer user since 13 years and I really miss the bluetooth function on mobile phone where you can send your music to another phone and get new music from others.
- jana_k99

As a computer user of 15-ish years I really miss the amount of buttons and ports (headphone jacks, CD-rom drives, SD card slots etc.) that devices used to have. My oldest smarthphone had 3 physical buttons at the bottom of the screen, the ones after only onscreen buttons and my current phone with a new version of android uses gestures instead of buttons for home/back/switching between apps, which aren't very intuitive and don't work half of the time. I just don't think it's necessary to remove these buttons to add 5mm of extra space to an already waaaay too big screen.
- marius

I am a computer user for 17 years, and I miss the window game. I was a window user until 2017, and I remember that minesweeper and card games were basically set up on my desktop. I can't find those kind of games in my Mac now.
- seoyoung

What I really miss is the old timeline from Instagram. Nowadays each time you update the main page new contend is loaded and the old content vanishes. But if there is no new content from the person you are following, you get random „shit“ and advertisements. Back than, old content stayed and you could come back every time to see the content you’re probably most interested in.
- vincent.dm_m3

One thing I really miss, is this excitement I felt as a kid, booting up the old PC of my dad, wanting to explore what I can do, mystified by how everything is working... (I guess over the 15 Years of me being a user, it just became a tool for me, nothing to be excited obout anymore) (not sure if this counts)
- unicorn_princess1

I'm a computer user since maybe 20 years (I don't know exactly) and what I really miss is using things for the first time. Like the first time playing a game, first time in the internet, the excitement of creating your first email address, adding friends that you rarely see in ICQ and be able to chat with them, etc. pp.
- c4r4m3lt1gg3r

I really miss texting via SMS and not Whatsapp or other social media. It felt more free and now with social media I feel watched and caged. Via SMS you arejust seen as a name, no pictures, no status, no personal information, no "seen", and no "last seen online". I know th ese things can be turned off but it still annoys me that people could have the chance to get mad at a late reply or no reply.
- isa_belx1

I really miss the old Video platform Vine. For me it was the first contact with crativ video Content as a yung child I spend a lot of tme wathing them and in this time it was so much better then the most Youtube vods.
- the_only_jo

What I miss as a person who uses computers since 7 years old is ICQ when all the friends were connected there (in 2005-2007 it was lit to chat there and I think it exist even now but all my friends changed to WhatsApp or Telegram). I also really miss the old version (from 2008) of VK (in contact, is like russian facebook) where you were able to make graffitis on the walls of others and you could play many online games like Happy Farmer :D I also miss computer games in CD form, it was always this special time when my parents brought me new games to play. Furthermore, I miss online blogs time where you could share your thoughts and what was really trendy- animated pictures - I also think that it still exist but it is no more so popular as it used to be.
- maria

Probably, I am a computer user for 14 years since I was 9 year-old... The one I really miss is 'CyWorld' and 'Buddy Buddy'. Reference Adress1 Reference Adress2 From 2000s to 2010s, they were kinda SNS things, and back then, most people had used these to communicate with their neighbour. In 'CyWorld', which you can make your own room & design its interior, there are tons of memes and it possesses people's shameful but memorable memories. In these days, we can show-off our usual days through Instagram or Twitter and so on, but I really do miss its vibe of the time..!
- jinnie

- unicorn_princess1

As soon as I know how I will make it possible to never send or receive an accidentally "reply all" email.
- c4r4m3lt1gg3r

As soon as I know how I will have a virtual assistant.
- isa_belx1

As soon as I know how I will be able to control electronic devices with my mind.
